The Vosges were baptized by Julius Cesar "VOESGUS" (god of the mountain, forest and hunting) .The Roman legions feared these forests for this cause and refused to penetrate even for battle. Vosges have been inhabited , visited and invaded since the beginning of time from the Neolithic to the present day unlike accounts of early monastic chroniclers of X and X1 who in good faith have seen a virgin nature, but lacked nowadays investigative means .There were Celts, Romans (baths and hydrotherapy: Plombières, luxeuil, Bains les Bains, Vittel, Contrexéville, Lifol the Great), and monks with Saint Colomban around 600 for many centuries. At the Plateau of a thousandLlakes within 3 kms of our chalets- gites one can observe the monks’ intervention concerning the construction of dikes of ponds to improve people's health through fish protein .On the road the "Bosons top" towards Beulotte saint Laurent a panel describes technically the construction of a pond- dike by the monks.
The Alsatians (15- 16 th centuries) also certainly contributed with their expertise to show how to live off the land .Words like "la schlitte" are not without origin. Hydropower associated with copper ores and others exploited by the Dukes de Lorraine (15- 16 th centuries) were the main drivers of industrial and administrative development and even brought justice etc ..
After this first industrial era leaving behind a local free energy , textile comes to reign over 2 centuries with appreciated peasant labor, also available in winter. Napoleon Bonaparte also recruited his "veterans" in the Vosges mountains for their resistance to rigorous climate There is a stele at the cross of Fresse sur Moselle about 6 km of hiking trails that depart before the chaletsrandovosges
